DENBIGH TOWN, Wales ----- UAB scored three goals in the final 15 minutes of the contest to pull out a 3-0 victory over Denbigh Town Football Club here Tuesday. The Blazers outshot Denbigh 21-1 on the night, and improved their record to 5-0 during the preseason trip through England and Wales.
"Tonight was a tough game for us," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "I thought we were tired mentally as well as physically, but at the end of the came, some of the younger guys were able to step up and finish the job."
It was the newcomers who scored the three UAB goals on the night, led by freshman Lukasz Kwapisz and Sandy Gbandi who each had a goal and an assist. However, it was freshman Derick Radcliffe who finally broke through the Denbigh defense in the 76th minute, when he received a pass from Gbandi and buried a shot past the outstretched arms of the keeper for a 1-0 lead.
Just two minutes later, at the 78:41 mark, Gbandi collected a rebound from a blicked Kwapisz shot, then drilled the ball into the top netting for a two-goal lead. Kwapisz then completed the scoring on a similar play in the 81st minute. Junior Angelo Thompson shot a ball which the keeper made the initial save; however, Kwapisz was there to stick in the rebound.
Along with outshooting Denbigh by 20 shots, the Blazers also had 17 corner kicks on the night.
UAB will play its final game before heading back to Birmingham when it takes on Halkyn F.C. on Wednesday, August 20, at 7 p.m. local time.
