BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Pitcher Erica Mascarenas and shortstop Dusti Roberts, both of Dixie State College in St. George, Utah, have signed to attend UAB, according to an announcement by Blazer head softball Marla Townsend.
Mascarenas and Roberts helped lead Dixie State to its first appearance at the NJCAA National Tournament this past season as their team finished fifth.
Mascarenas, a Bloomfield, N.M. native, was the Rebels' top returning pitcher and went 19-9 with a 1.56 ERA this past season while amassing 179 strikeouts and only giving up 78 walks, in 184 innings pitched. She compiled an impressive 37-13 record in her career at Dixie and broke into the school's career leaders lists for wins, appearances, starts, winning percentage, and shutouts.
At Bloomfield High School, she was a four-year letterwinner and two-time team MVP. She was also named to the all-state team three times and was on the honor roll four times for the Bobcats.
"Were looking forward to Erica continuing her success in the circle for the Blazers," Townsend said. "She's coming to us with some excellent credentials and we look forward to her contribution as a top-notch pitcher."
Roberts, from Las Vegas, served as the team captain at Dixie in her final year and was named second-team all-region after hitting .304. She is the only player in the history of the program to start every game in her two-year career. She was 10-of-11 in stolen base attempts this past season after a perfect 11-of-11 her freshman year. Roberts finished her career at Dixie with a .297 batting average and is listed in six different offensive categories of the single season top 10 school records. After the 2003 NJCAA National Tournament, Roberts was named to the all-tournament Team and she was also chosen to represent the NJCAA at the prestigious Canada Cup.
Roberts is a graduate of Palo Verde High School in Las Vegas where she was a two-time team MVP and three-time defensive player of the year for the Panthers. She was a three-time all-conference player in basketball and softball and state qualifier in cross-country.
"Dusti will be coming in to compete for a spot with some very talented middle infielders and we look for her to stand out in the crowd after two remarkable seasons at the junior college level and after facing the talent at Canada Cup this summer," said Townsend.
Mascarenas and Roberts join previous Blazer softball signees Lindsay Stanley, an outfielder from Clay-Chalkville High School and pitcher Brittany Holman Hodge from Edgewood Academy in Wetumpka, Ala.
