BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB sophomore goalkeeper Clint Baumstark signed a contract with Major League Soccer and will forego his final two seasons of eligibility to play professionally, head coach Mike Getman announced here Wednesday. Baumstark becomes the fourth player, and second goalkeeper under Getman, to sign with the MLS.
"We are sad to see Clint go, but we are happy for him also," said Getman. "He has accomplished one of his goals by becoming a professional soccer player and we wish him all the best in the future."
Baumstark played just two seasons with the Blazers. In that period of time, the Thornton, Colo. native established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the country. After Baumstark's first season in 2001, he was named as a freshman All-American by Soccer America, freshman Goalkeeper of the Year by CollegeSoccer.com and also was named the Freshman of the Year in Conference USA, among others.
After the 2002 campaign, Baumstark was named to the First-Team All-Conference USA. At the end of the season, Baumstark was honored by being named to the Under 20 U.S. Soccer National Team pool as a goalkeeper, becoming the second UAB player to be named to a national team while currently wearing the UAB jersey.
For his two-year UAB career, Baumstark ranks first in school history with a GAA of 1.02, third in shutouts with 13, third in victories with 23 and fifth in saves with 158. He holds UAB single-season records in GAA (0.96 - 2001) and shutouts (9 - 2001), while also ranking third in single-season wins with 14 in 2001.
