NEW ORLEANS ----- The eighth-seeded UAB women's tennis team (10-7, 3-3) fell to No. 9 seed East Carolina, 4-1, here Saturday morning at the 2003 Conference USA Championships.
The Blazers started the match well, taking the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. UAB's Natascha Immele and Femke de Boer defeated Lady Pirates Lyndall Jordan and Raluca Baicu, 8-6, in the No. 1 match. Blazers Julia Hoch and Nadia Dellarciprete were victorious over ECU's Emily Kohl and Cristina Meilicke in the No. 3 spot, 8-2.
In the No. 2 position, East Carolina's Paulina Sierpinski and Kirstin Buchanan were 8-3 winners over UAB's Ornischa Maier-Knapp and Yvonne Ernst.
East Carolina took control of the match in singles, winning all four completed matches for the victory. In the most dramatic match of the day, Lady Pirate Jordan lost the first set, 3-6, but rallied to defeat UAB's de Boer, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, in the No. 2 slot.
In the No. 3 tilt, Blazer Ernst fell to ECU's Baicu, 7-5, 6-3. At No. 5 singles, Lady Pirate Kohl was a 6-0, 7-6 winner over UAB's Hoch. Blazer Dellarciprete was defeated by ECU's Meilicke, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 6 position.
The No. 1 match between UAB's Immele and East Carolina's Buchanan was stopped, as was the No. 4 match between ECU's Sierpinski and Blazer Maier-Knapp, when the match was clinched.
UAB will play in a consolation match on Monday at noon.
