UAB Softball Gears Up to Open C-USA Play

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.---UAB softball begins C-USA play this weekend as it plays host to the South Florida Bulls on March 15 at George Ward Park in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m., followed by a single game on Sunday, March 16 at 1 p.m.
UAB (14-10) is entering this weekend's series with the Bulls after splitting with Middle Tennesse on March 12. In their 15-3 victory over the Lady Raiders, the Blazers connected for four home runs, including a grandslam by junior Amanda Ellis.
As a team, the Blazers are hitting .265 on the season with 13 home runs. First baseman, Kris Lara still has the hot bat for the Blazers with a .343 batting average. In UAB's series against Middle Tennessee, Lara went three for six with a double.
The Bulls (28-7, 3-0 C-USA) have three conference victories under their belt, beating East Carolina three times. As a team, South Florida is hitting .303 with 13 home runs. The Bulls have successfully stolen 58-of-71 attempts. Courtney Lewellen leads the Bulls with a .388 batting average, including six doubles and a homerun. Teammate Renee Oursler is second on the team with five doubles, three triples and two home runs. Oursler leads South Florida in steals with 11 on 12 attempts.
Thanks to UAB's sports marketing department, the first 50 Blazer fans to enter the game on March 15 will receive a free Worth wristband. On Saturday, March 16, the UAB softball team will be available to autograph posters following the game.
