UAB Softball Splits With Middle Tennessee

Murfreesboro, Tenn.---UAB splits doubleheader with Middle Tennessee, losing the first 3-1, and winning the second 15-3 with three home runs and a grand slam.
In UAB's first game of the day against Middle Tennessee, the Lady Raiders jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when Kip Phillips reached on a single and advanced to third when Courtney Mitchell reached on an error. Mitchell stole second and Phillips advanced home on the throw, giving the Lady Raiders the 1-0 lead.
Middle Tennessee added another run to the scoreboard in the second inning when Mitchell homered over the left field wall, giving the Lady Raiders the 2-0 lead.
The Lady Raiders scored again in the fifth after they loaded the bases on two hits and an error. Muriel Ledbetter walked to bring Mitchell across the plate, adding to the Lady Raiders 3-0 lead.
The Blazers rallied in the seventh inning when Kris Lara doubled to left center field and was driven in when Kelli Thompson singled. The Lady Raiders held off the Blazers the rest of the seventh inning, securing the 3-1 victory.
Alexis Kreske took the loss for the Blazers in her first appearance on the mound.
UAB rallied early in the first inning of the second game when Candice Hithe singled and scored when Beth Mullins blasted her third homerun of the season, giving the Blazers the 2-0 lead.
Middle Tennessee battled back in the first inning when Erica Buhl singled up the middle and scored on a Mitchell double. Megan Cherinka singled and scored when Danielle DeCamino hit a two run shot over the left field wall, giving the Lady Raiders the 3-2 lead.
In the second inning, UAB's Kelli Thompson tied the game at 2-2, with a homerun over the left field wall, her second of the year.
UAB scored two runs in the third inning when Hithe reached on a bunt single and was driven in when Cliffanie Engram hit a shot over the left field wall, her second homerun of the year, giving UAB the 5-3 lead.
UAB kept the momentum going in the fifth inning when Hithe reached on a bunt single and stole second base. Sara Christophel singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Engram. Hithe scored on a single by Mullins and Christophel scored on a wild pitch. Mullins and Lara followed with singles and Thompson walked to load the bases. Amanda Ellis hit UAB's first grand slam of the year, her second homerun of the season. Chelsea McCall singled when she pinch hit for Kristin Stanfill and was driven in by Engram's single. Hithe scored on a walk by Mullins pushing UAB's lead to 13-3. Christophel scored on a wild pitch, followed by Engram scoring on an error by the pitcher, giving UAB the 15-3 lead.
UAB held off the Lady Raiders in the fifth inning, securing the 15-3 victory over Middle Tennessee in five innings.
The Blazers face South Florida at home March 15, at George Ward Park in a doubleheader, starting at 1:00 pm.
