ATHENS, Ga. --- The UAB women's tennis team tallied one victory in the first day of the 2003 ITA Southern Regional Championships here on Friday. The event is being hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
"It was a disappointing day for us," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "This is the strongest competition we'll face this season, but it would have been nice to have recorded some more wins. The effort was there. Hopefully, the results will be there in the future."
Annemieke Elsholz was the only Blazer to record a win. Elsholz advanced to the third round of the "B" singles upper division, with a victory over Georgia Southern's Callie Ward, who withdrew from the match.
In the "A" singles upper division, UAB's Femke de Boer fell to Florida International's Bruna Discordia, 6-1, 6-2. While in the "A" singles lower division, Blazer Ornischa Maier-Knapp lost to Audra Adams of Ole Miss, 6-1, 6-1.
UAB's Nadia Dellarciprete was beaten by Jacksonville's Nisrine Hajbane, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3, in the "B" singles upper. In "B" singles lower second round, Natalie Tirapelli of Florida State knocked off UAB's Marrit Jansma, 6-3, 6-3, while Blazer Julia von Samson fell to Yumi Ueda of Mississippi State, 6-1, 6-3.
