NORMAL, Ala. ----- The UAB men's soccer team fought its way to a 1-1 tied with in-state rival Alabama A&M, here Wednesday night. The tie is the fourth on the campaign for UAB (6-3-4), which sets a school record for most ties in a season.
"I thought they had the better possession in the first half, but we were able to take control in the second half," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "We created numerous scoring chances, but we just couldn't capitalize on our opportunities."
The Blazers opened the scoring in the beginning of the second half when freshman Jerson Monteiro scored off a corner kick from Leandro de Oliveira. It marked Monteiro's fourth goal of the season, tying him for the team lead. It was also de Oliveira's team-leading fifth assist on the campaign.
The Blazers missed a golden opportunity two gain a two-goal advantage on a penalty kick; however, they were unable to convert.
UAB looked to be in full control of the match when a Bulldog player received a red-card ejection, but despite the Blazers dominating ball possession, Alabama A&M was able to score the game-tying goal off a corner kick as the end of regulation neared.
UAB had several scoring chances in both overtime periods, but were unable to connect on the game-winner.
"Alabama A&M is probably the most talented team we have played this year and they are extremely talented," continued Getman. "I am disappointed we did not get the win, because we had several great chances to pull it out, but I am proud of our guys and the effort they gave tonight."
Freshman goalkeeper Jeremy Drake made his first career start for UAB. He allowed one goal, while making seven saves on the evening.
UAB will next return to play in Conference USA when it faces Louisville on Saturday, October 18, at 7 p.m. on West Campus Field.
