CHARLOTTE, N.C.-----The UAB women's soccer team (4-4-1, 1-1-0) lost its first Conference USA game of the season, falling to No. 17 Charlotte, 4-3, in overtime. The Blazers owned a 3-1 lead at halftime, but couldn't hold on as the 49ers scored three unanswered goals.
"In the first half, we were doing all the things we had set out to do," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "We were winning balls in the air, attacking and finishing. When we did those things, we were very successful. In the second half, we got complacent. We allowed Charlotte to get confidence and they beat us to everything. After we got ahead, we quit doing the things that had gotten us to that point."
UAB started the game off on the right foot when Tara Kidwell scored in the first seven minutes of the game. Less than six minutes later, Jill Knottek scored on an assist from Kidwell. Charlotte made it a 2-1 game when Jennie Leeder headed the ball into the goal off a Megan Terlip assist in the 14th minute. Knottek scored her second goal of the game in the 31st minute on a pass from Liz Bosscher.
The 49ers made the score 3-2 when Courtney Crandell scored in the 50th minute. Charlotte then tied the match at 3-3 when Lindsay Duncan scored with just over a minute left in regulation off assists from Crandell and Leeder.
The overtime period was not kind to the Blazers. Four and a half minutes into overtime, Crandell scored the game-winning goal when she beat several UAB defenders with a scoring shot.
"Charlotte is an excellent team," said Harbin. "They showed why they are ranked 17th in the country. We need to use Saturday as a chance to find some solutions."
