BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - South Florida catcher Devin Ivany drove in three runs and starting pitcher Ryan Gloger held UAB to two runs on two hits as the Bulls defeated the Blazers 7-2 in the first game of a three-game Conference USA series Thursday at Young Memorial Field.
Ivany drove in two runs with a two-out double in the top of the fifth inning and brought home a third with a single in the seventh.
South Florida (30-24, 15-13 C-USA) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning as first baseman Ronnie Handley drove in third baseman Jeff Baisley and center fielder Mike Barclay with a single to left field.
The Bulls took a 3-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by Baisley which scored second baseman Mike Macaluso.
UAB (15-39, 6-22 C-USA) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third as shortstop Mark Garner led off the inning with a solo home run off South Florida starter Gloger. Garner also drove in the second UAB run of the game in the sixth inning, drawing a bases-loaded walk off Gloger to bring home left fielder Kyle Leon.
South Florida Head Coach Eddie Cardieri then went to his bullpen, bringing in right-hander David Austen who struck out Blazer catcher Pete Giangrosso with the bases loaded to get out of the inning.
With South Florida leading 7-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, UAB again loaded the bases on hits by Leon, third baseman Matt Gaulden and second baseman Scottie Holden. With one out in the inning, Cardieri once again went to his bullpen, bringing in right-hander Joey Livingston who promptly induced a double-play off the bat of Garner to end the inning.
Livingston worked the final one and 2/3 innings to earn his sixth save of the year, allowing no hits, runs or walks, with one strikeout. Gloger (5-3) worked five and 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with five walks and five strikeouts.
UAB starter Jon Burgett (1-4) took the loss, working five complete innings and allowing six runs on eight hits, with three walks and one strikeout.
The Blazers and Bulls are scheduled to play game two of their weekend series Friday. Game time has been moved up to 1:00 pm CDT for weather considerations.
