BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - South Florida center fielder Mike Barclay homered twice and drove in five runs and pitchers Jon Uhl and Jason Bartz held UAB hitless for seven and 2/3 innings as the Bulls routed the Blazers 16-2 in Conference USA baseball action Friday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
South Florida (31-24, 16-13 C-USA) scored three runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Barclay and an RBI double by designated hitter Devin Ivany, and added four more in the second, as second baseman Mike Macaluso drove in a run with a single and Barclay hit a two-run homer off UAB reliever Rusty McIntyre.
The Bulls broke the game open even further in the fifth inning, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring six runs on six hits, including back-to-back-to-back solo homers by Barclay, Ivany, and first baseman Ronnie Handley. USF added two runs in the sixth on an RBI single by catcher Allen Shirley and a sacrifice fly by Macaluso, and a final run in the seventh on an RBI double by Handley.
South Florida starter Uhl (8-4) worked five complete innings, allowing no hits or runs with one walk and two strikeouts. Bartz worked three and 2/3 innings and retired seven straight UAB batters before experiencing difficulty in the bottom of the eighth.
With one out in the eighth, Bartz hit UAB second baseman Seth Rollin and then walked shortstop Mark Garner. After retiring catcher Brad Bamberg on a ground out, he finally allowed a hit - a single to left field by center fielder Millard Dawson that scored Rollin -- breaking up both the no-hitter and the shutout.
UAB (15-40, 6-23 C-USA) went on to score a second run in the bottom of the ninth as pinch-hitter Scottie Holden singled and scored on an RBI single by designated hitter Joe Yarbrough.
Yarbrough (0-6) was also the Blazers' starting pitcher, working one inning and allowing four runs on four hits, with two walks and a strikeout.
Game three of the three-game series between the Blazers and Bulls is set for 1:00 pm CDT Saturday at Young Memorial Field.
UAB will honor eight seniors making their final appearance in a Blazer uniform -- Bamberg, pitcher Ross Dobbins, third baseman Matt Gaulden, Garner, outfielder Eric Lyon, pitcher Andre Parks, pitcher Michael Stallings and Yarbrough - prior to Saturday's game.
