TAMPA - With the score tied at 1-1, DePaul's Saskia Roberson notched a sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Jenny Doezie and claim a 2-1 win over UAB in the championship game of the C-USA Softball Tournament on Saturday at the USF Softball Tournament.
The game was tied until the ninth inning when Christina Douglas doubled down the middle and was replaced by pinch runner Doezie at first. She would advance to second after Shavaughne Desecki flied out to centerfield. Roberson came to the plate, notching a sacrifice fly to score Doezie.
UAB's Kerri Foster posted an impressive game, however she earned the loss to fall to 14-8 on the season. DePaul's Lindsay Chouinard completed the game, giving up six hits and striking out five.
"Knowing it was a single championship game helped us out coming into the game against Depaul," said Head Coach Marla Townsend. "Our goal for this game was to keep the score low, which we did, but we failed to score when we had chances. Two big goals that we set at the beginning of our season was to be in the top three in regular season for C-USA and be in the championship game in the tournament. We managed to achieve both of these. The senior leadership made the team believe that we could obtain our goals through hard work and determination. Overall, I am extremely pleased and proud of this young team."
All-Tournament honorees for the Blazers were junior shortstop Candice Hithe, freshman outfielder Sara Christophel and senior pitcher Megan Stephenson.
