UAB Men's Soccer Announces 2002 Schedule

The UAB men's soccer team will opens its 2002 season August 31 at the UC-Irvine Tournament where a second day match against NCAA Tournament participant San Diego serves notice of a tough schedule as the Blazers look to get back to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year.
UAB has made three straight trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a trip to the "Sweet 16" last year and the "Elite 8" in 1999. UAB finished the 2001 season ranked No. 12 by the National Soccer Coaches of America Association. The Blazers were 15-6 last year and were second in C-USA with a 7-3 league record.
The Blazers play three straight tournaments to open the season prior to entering conference play. The 10-game Conference USA schedule also gets started with a bang as the Blazers travel to face defending C-USA champion Saint Louis, on Sept. 21. The Billikens advanced to the final eight in the NCAA Tournament last year. UAB hosts South Florida, another C-USA opponent who went to the NCAA Tournament, Nov. 1.
''This is a really solid schedule for us,'' Blazer head coach Mike Getman said. ''We get started in what will be one of the better tournaments in the country and host our tournament with quality teams such as Rhode Island and Birmingham-Southern. I believe Conference USA is one of the top soccer leagues in the country and playing 10 league games makes this schedule even tougher.''
Birmingham-Southern makes its second straight appearance in the UAB Nike Classic Tournament. The Blazers take on the Panthers in the first day of the Classic, Friday, Sept. 6. Charlotte and Rhode Island play the first game that day. The tournament concludes the following Sunday when Birmingham-Southern plays Charlotte and UAB faces Rhode Island.
The Blazers return the favor a week later traveling across town to compete in BSC's tournament. UAB will face Western Kentucky, Friday, Sept. 13 and Navy, Sunday, Sept. 15.
Following the three tournaments the Blazers head into conference play. UAB travels to Tulsa in non-conference action, Sept. 23, and hosts Georgia State, Nov. 3 in the next-to-last game of the season.
UAB finishes the regular season hosting Cincinnati, Saturday, Nov. 9
