Baseball Drops Game One To Tulane

Right fielder Gerald
Clark homered twice and drove in
four runs, first baseman Michael Aubrey hit a two-run homer, and starting pitcher Nick Bourgeois struck out 11 batters as Tulane defeated UAB 15-7 in game one of a Conference USA series Friday evening at Young
Memorial Field.
??????????? Tulane? (19-17, 6-7 Conference USA) broke open
a 4-4 game by scoring a run in the fifth inning, three in the sixth, one in the
seventh, and five in the eighth.
??????????? UAB
(9-24, 2-11 C-USA) led 4-2 entering the top of the third inning, but Aubrey
tied the game at 4-4 with one swing, slamming a two-run shot to right center
field off Blazer starter Joe Yarbrough.
??????????? Clark
drove in two of Tulane's three runs in the top of the fifth with a
two-run homer that chased Yarbrough from the game, and then hit a solo shot to
left center off UAB reliever Ryan Huffman.
??????????? UAB
first baseman Matt Womble went
four-for-five in the game with two doubles, one RBI and a run scored.? Womble drove in UAB's fourth run
of the game in the bottom of the second with a single that scored shortstop Mark
Garner? and hit doubles in the first and fifth innings.
??????????? Tulane
took a 10-4 lead into the top of the eighth inning.? The Green Wave sent nine men to the plate in that inning,
scoring five times on five hits - including back-to-back-to-back RBI
singles by center fielder Jon Kaplan, left fielder Aaron Feldman,
and second baseman James Jurries.
??????????? Tempers
flared briefly in the top of the eighth as a pitch got away from UAB's
Huffman and went behind Tulane third baseman Brooks Shankle, and Huffman then hit the next batter, shortstop Tommy
Manzella.? Both dugouts began to empty onto the field as Manzella took
a step toward the mound and then headed to first base, but the umpires quickly put
a stop to any further problems.
??????????? Tulane's
Bourgeois (6-1) worked eight complete innings, allowing four runs (two earned)
on six hits, with one walk and 11 strikeouts.
??????????? UAB's
Yarbrough (0-6) worked four and 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs on 10 hits,
with two walks and six strikeouts.
??????????? The
teams will play game two of the three-game series Saturday, with first pitch
set for 3:00 pm CDT.
