Charlotte scored nine runs in the first two innings en route to an 11-1 win and a three-game series sweep of UAB Sunday afternoon at Phillips Field.
The 49ers (15-9, 5-1 C-USA) scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by an RBI double by second baseman George Sandel and an RBI single by shortstop Brad Lamm.
The onslaught continued in the second inning, as Charlotte scored five times on just one hit, taking advantage of one UAB error, three hit batters, and two balks. UAB starter Ross Dobbins (2-1) lasted one complete inning and was unable to retire any of the three batters he faced in the second inning, before giving way to reliever Michael Stallings. Stallings faced only two batters - hitting both - before being replaced by freshman Jeff Brown, who got the Blazers out of the inning.
Dobbins, who had been one of UAB's most consistent performers entering Sunday's start, allowed seven runs (six earned) on four hits, with one walk and one strikeout and two wild pitches. The UAB defense committed two errors while he was in the game.
UAB (8-15, 1-5 C-USA) got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning as Charlotte starter Zack Treadway walked two batters, and then gave way to reliever Matt Landphair, who walked two more, allowing Blazer first baseman Matt Womble to score. Landphair then got out of the inning as the next UAB batter, catcher Justin Miller, hit a ground ball to third that retired base runner Mitch Jones for the third out.
Charlotte starter Treadway (1-0) worked four and 1/3 innings to get the victory, allowing one run on four hits, with one walk and one strikeout.
Right fielder Thomas Bowker drove in three runs on two hits, with three runs scored for the 49ers, while Lamm had two RBI on two hits for the afternoon.
The game was halted in the seventh inning under the "ten run" rule.
UAB hosts Samford Tuesday (Mar. 26) at 7:00 pm at Young Memorial Field.
