Baseball Defeated By Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --Robert Evans, Eric Hollis and Major Allred each had three hits and Kip Snowden drove in two runs with a second-inning home run as Samford defeated UAB 8-3 Tuesday evening at Young Memorial Field.
UAB (8-16) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as designated hitter Josh Terry, making his collegiate debut, led off with an infield single and scored on an RBI single by right fielder Kyle Leon.
Samford (15-12) answered in the top of the second as Evans led off with a walk and scored as the next batter, Snowden, slammed a homer just inside the left field foul screen off UAB starter Ryan Huffman, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
The Bulldogs added three more runs in the fourth inning as Evans drove in second baseman Michael Collins with a single and Hollis hit a two-RBI double into the left field corner, scoring Evans and left fielder Cory Sumner.
Both teams scored a run in the sixth, Samford on an RBI single by Allred and UAB on double by catcher Justin Miller that scored first baseman Eric Lyon.
The Bulldogs tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning, one as pinch runner Mario White scored from third on a wild pitch by UAB reliever Tony Falls, and another as pinch runner Jeff Stephens scored on an error by Blazer second baseman Seth Rollin.
UAB scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the ninth on a ground out by center fielder Chad House that brought in shortstop Mark Garner.
Samford reliever Scott Fowler (2-1) worked four and 1/3 innings to get the victory, allowing one run on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
UAB's Huffman (1-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits in three and 2/3 innings, with two walks and four strikeouts.
UAB returns to action this weekend, hosting East Carolina in a three-game Conference USA series.Central Florida for a three-game Atlantic Sun series.
