Baseball Drops Game Two To Charlotte

Maine scattered four hits and struck
out 12 UAB batters in seven innings of work and first baseman Brad Erwin drove in two runs as the 49ers defeated UAB 4-2 in
Conference USA baseball action Saturday afternoon at Phillips Field.
Maine, a junior
right-hander, did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and held UAB
scoreless through four and 2/3 innings until Blazer second baseman Seth
Rollin put UAB on the scoreboard in
the top of the fifth with a two-out solo home run to left field.
Charlotte (14-9, 4-1 C-USA)
jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Erwin drove in second baseman George
Sandel with a sacrifice fly.? The 49ers took a 3-0 lead in the third
as Erwin once again drove in Sandel, this time with an RBI single.
Catcher Alex Derhak gave the 49ers a 4-0 lead as he led off the bottom
of the fourth inning with a solo home run off UAB starter Andre Parks.
UAB's second run of
the day also came on a home run off Maine, this time by catcher Justin
Miller.
The home runs were the first
of the season for both Rollin and Miller.
Maine (3-4) allowed two
earned runs on four hits with five walks along with his 12 strikeouts.? Charlotte relievers Matt Johnson and Jacob Chaney each worked one inning without allowing a hit.? Chaney struck out two of the three
batters he faced in the ninth en route to his third save of the season.
UAB's Parks (1-4)
worked six complete innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits, with no
walks and two strikeouts.
Freshman reliever Tony
Falls worked two very effective
innings, allowing no runs on two hits with one walk.
The two teams will complete
their three-game Conference USA series with a 1:00 pm EST game Sunday.
