BIRMINGHAM - UAB's Monika Schmid and Femke deBoer defeated Auburn's 28th-ranked Katia Illarionova and Carolina Maurer at No. 1 doubles, but it wasn't enough as 32nd-ranked Auburn ran away with a 5-0 win over the Blazers Friday afternoon at the Brook Highland Racquet Club.
The Blazer tandem defeated the Tiger duo 8-4 to improve to 8-3 on the season. The win was the first this season over a ranked opponent.
Despite the win at the No. 1 position, the Blazers (5-7, 2-1 in Conference USA) fell at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, giving the Tigers the one up after doubles play.
In singles play, the Tigers swept the Blazers in straight sets at the No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 spots. The No. 2 and No. 4 positions were both tied at 1 set, but did not finish play.
The Blazers will do a little travelling for spring break as they head to Bermuda to play three matches in three days. UAB will take on Memphis, Cincinnati and Brown beginning March 26 and wrapping up March 28.
