Houston's Hyung Cho had three hits, including an RBI single to cap off a two-run seventh inning as No. 8 ranked Houston held off UAB 3-2 in the Conference USA opener for both teams Friday night.
Houston pushed its record to 14-4, 1-0 and UAB fell to 7-10 and 0-1.
Houston got four straight two-out hits in the seventh to break open a 1-1 pitcher's dual. Pinch hitter Gabe Lucas doubled and scored on Jesse Crain's single. Anthony Scalise and Cho followed with singles. Cho's scored Crain.
The Blazers cut the margin to one in the bottom of the seventh. Quincy Williams singled and moved to second on an error. He then moved to third on a balk and scored on a groundout by Justin Miller.
Houston starting pitcher Brad Sullivan did not allow an earned run, struck out seven and allowed just three hits in 6 2/3 innings. Crain moved in to pitch the ninth and recorded his fourth save of the year, allowing one hit.
UAB's starter Joe Yarbrough tired in the seventh, throwing 125 pitches. He gave up nine hits in 6 2/3 innings. Tony Falls pitched two scoreless innings to give the Blazers a chance late.
Williams led UAB with two hits, a run and an RBI single in the second inning. The Blazers had four hits to Houston's 11. The Cougars were able to overcome four errors.
The two teams play Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 o'clock in the three game set.
