Designated
hitter Hyung Cho drove in
two runs with a first-inning home run and starting pitcher Keith Whatley held UAB to one run in eight innings as the
eighth-ranked Cougars (15-4, 2-0 C-USA) defeated UAB 5-1 in Conference USA
action Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
Cho, batting
in the third spot in the order, got the Cougars on the scoreboard quickly with
a homer to left center off UAB starter Andre
Parks that also scored leadoff hitter Michael
Bourn.
Whatley (5-1) held UAB to just four
hits over his first seven innings, and finished his day with three walks and
seven strikeouts. He allowed a total of
one run on six hits in eight complete innings of work.
Parks (1-3) was the losing pitcher,
working two and 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, with three walks
and one strikeout.
UAB (7-11, 0-2 C-USA) scored its lone
run of the afternoon in the bottom of the eighth, as left fielder Jeremy Moran led off with a single off
Whatley, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on center fielder Mitch Jones' RBI single.
The two teams will complete the
three-game C-USA series Sunday. Sunday's start time has been moved up to Noon CST.
