UAB Sweeps Oakland University
Birmingham, Ala. - The Blazers (10-3) took two games from Oakland (1-6) this afternoon winning the first, 6-2, and the second, 3-0.
In the second inning of game one, junior Kelli Thompson (Decatur, Ala.) and freshman Kris Lara (Elk Grove, Calif.) scored off an error by the third baseman, 2-0. Catcher Amanda Ellis (Fairhope, Ala.) scored on an error by the first baseman after being walked. Sophomore outfielder Emily Scarbrough (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and junior outfielder Cliffanie Engram (Pelham, Ala.) both scored on a single by sophomore second baseman Beth Mullins (Fairhope, Ala.), 5-0.
In the fourth inning, Scarbrough steals home to add another run for the Blazers, 6-2.
Senior Megan Stephenson (Washington, Ill.) picked up the win for UAB throwing hard all seven innings, allowing nine hits and two runs. Stephenson (3-1) picked up five strikeouts on the day.
In game two, the Blazers scored early in the first inning. Junior Candice Hithe (Daphne, Ala.) led the inning off with a walk. She then scored on an error by the first baseman, 1-0.
In the fourth inning, senior Kai Paul (Birmingham, Ala.) led the inning off with a single. Pinch runner, Scarbrough, scored on a homerun by Thompson, 3-0.
Thompson (3-0) also picked up the victory for UAB going the distance for seven complete innings. She allowed five hits and had one strikeout.
The Blazers are up next this weekend at the LSU Purple & Gold Challenge in Baton Rouge, La. They will face Georgia Tech, Long Island University, McNeese, and (5) LSU.
