BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- The UAB women's basketball team (1-2) fell to Alabama State (1-3), 60-51 in the final game of the 2002 Lady Blazer Classic on Sunday night in Bartow Arena. Natasha Thomas led UAB with her second double-double of the year, scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. It was the second straight loss for the Lady Blazers and the first win of the season for Alabama State. Chrishutta Lewis led all scorers with 22 points and also had three boards, two assists and three steals for Alabama State.
"We had a huge problem with team chemistry," said UAB head coach Jeannie Milling. "When we come together and get over our individual selfishness then we will understand what it means to be a team. We have younger players getting some time and that is important. We have to pull this team together."
Poor shooting was a downfall for the Lady Blazers, as they shot 29.1 percent from the floor, 16.7 percent from beyond the arc and 69.2 percent from the free throw line. UAB had trouble hanging onto the ball, committing 20 turnovers while allowing 10 steals.
Alabama State's biggest lead was 12 points with 7:19 left in the second half, but the Lady Blazers battled back. With 4:14 left in the game, Chantell Thomas made a lay-up to put UAB within four, 50-46. However, the celebration was short lived as Jawanda West sank two free throws and ASU's tough defense never allowed UAB to get closer.
Next, the Lady Blazers travel to Auburn, Ala., to take on the Tigers on Tuesday, December 3, at 7 p.m.
