UAB men's soccer player Brantley Spillman (Griffin, Ga.) has been selected to participate in the UMBRO Select All-Star game, Feb. 9 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
The Select game is the top all-star game in the nation for collegiate soccer players. It is held prior to Major League Soccer Draft, Feb. 10-11. Spillman will begin camp, Feb. 6.
Spillman played the sweeper position for the Blazers. He was selected second-team All-South by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He was also a second-team All-Conference USA selection. He started 71 games in four seasons for UAB.
The Blazers advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year, with Spillman being a starter each season. He was a key reasons that two different goalkeepers hold the school record for goals against average at 0.96. David Clemente accomplished the feat in 2000 and freshman Clint Baumstark repeated it this past season.
This year the Blazers won the first two games in the tournament, advancing to the ?Sweet 16?. UAB shut out the nation's top scoring team Furman, 1-0 and beating South Carolina 2-1.
This is the third straight season the Blazers have had a player selected to the UMBRO Select Game. Last year Clemente and Rumbani Munthali both participated. Peter Byarhunga participated in the 2000 game.
