In the summer of 1996, Hokanson teamed with former Big Bend Community College assistant coach Jess Menzia and built yet another team from the ground up. The pair started an Amateur Softball Association (ASA) Women's A team that consisted of Western Oregon State players as well as select players from the Northwest. The team finished with a 16-13 record and competed against some of the top teams from the Northwest, including the second-ranked team in the nation that summer.

"I am extremely excited to have Mick join our staff," said Townsend. "He brings a wide range of experience and knowledge to our program. He has an unbelievable amount of enthusiasm and such a strong work ethic. He will be a valuable addition to our team."
While at Huntsville High School, Madewell's assistant coaching responsibilities included hitting instruction, defensive drills and strategies and the designing of quickness and agility drills.
