Vladulescu Falls In NCAA Third Round

?UAB's Mirela Vladulescu saw her brilliant singles career come to an end Wednesday as she lost to 2nd-ranked Ansley Cargill of Duke 1-6, 7-6 (7-3 6-7 in NCAA Championship third-round play at the Tennis Center at Stone Mountain.
Vladulescu, who finished the 2001 regular season ranked 20th in the nation, won the second set in a tiebreaker (7-3) and battled 2nd seed Cargill to another tiebreaker in the third set, eventually losing 7-5.? She reached the third round by defeating Stanford's Gabriela Lastra 6-0, 6-3 on Tuesday and Sara Walker of UCLA 6-1, 6-2 earlier Wednesday.?
The most successful woman tennis player in UAB history, Vladulescu finished her four-year career (1997-01) with a 107-16 overall singles record.? She was 33-3 overall during the 2000-01 school year, and 23-2 this spring - all while serving underhanded as a result of a 1998 shoulder injury and subsequent surgery.??
By advancing to the NCAA final 16, Vladulescu qualified for All-America honors, a feat she also accomplished in 1998 when she advanced to the quarterfinal round.? She participated in NCAA Championship singles play in three of her four seasons at UAB (1998, 1999, 2001).
