UAB Softball Sweeps Doubleheader From Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS - UAB (21-26, 5-6 Conference USA) swept both games of a doubleheader from Saint Louis (17-22, 2-9 C-USA) in Conference USA softball action at the Billiken Sports Center.
In game one, the Blazers lone run came in the top of the second inning. With one out, shortstop Beth Mullins singled to left center. First baseman Jessica Smith followed with a single to right field, advancing Mullins to third. Right fielder Darci Cadieux then committed on error on her throw to third, allowing Mullins to score.
Kerri Foster (10-10) recorded her third complete game shut out of the season, working seven innings, allowing three hits, one walk and striking out five.
Heather Hubert (6-11) went the distance for the Billikens and got the loss. Hubert pitched seven innings, allowed five hits, one unearned run, one walk and recorded three strikeouts.
The Blazers jumped out in front in the top of the first inning in the second game when pitcher Kelli Thompson singled in center fielder Cliffanie Engram. Mullins then followed with a two- run home run to left field to put the Blazers up 3-0.
UAB added two runs in the top of the second when left fielder Jessica Brown singled in catcher Amanda Ellis. Third baseman Candice Hithe was then able to score on the same play on a throw to second base in an attempt to putout Brown.
Saint Louis' lone run came in the bottom of the ninth inning. Pitcher Nicole Bohnenstiehl reached first on a fielding error by Mullins to start the inning. Catcher Kalee Reichert then reached on a fielder's choice and Bohnenstiehl was safe at second on a throwing error by Mullins. Right fielder Kerri Higgins followed with a single to center field, allowing Bohnenstiehl to score, unearned.
Thompson (9-14) tossed her 12th complete game of the year and picked up the victory for UAB. She allowed one unearned run on five hits, walked one and struck out one in seven innings.
Bohnenstiehl (11-10) went the distance for Saint Louis and got the loss. She pitched seven innings, allowed five runs on five hits, walked one and struck out seven.
The two teams will square off in the final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
