UAB Softball Defeats Northern Illinois 3-2

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Jessica Smith drove in pinch-runner Amber Rouse with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as UAB defeated Northern Illinois 3-2 in extra innings Thursday at the USF/Clearwater Parks and Recreation Tournament.
Northern Illinois took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Gretchen Szymski?s RBI single drove in Samantha Knoll.
UAB came back to take a 2-1 lead in the fifth as outfielder Cliffanie Engram and starting pitcher Kelli Thompson both had RBI singles.
Northern Illinois tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh inning as pinch-runner Erin Holohan scored on a groundout to first base by right fielder Chrissy Johnson.?
UAB reliever Kerri Foster (5-6) worked two and two-thirds innings in relief of Thompson to earn the victory, allowing no runs and striking out one NIU batter.
UAB (13-14) was scheduled to play Fordham Thursday at 4:00 pm EST.
