Blazer Baseball Defeats Lipscomb 17-5

UAB scored eight runs in the seventh inning and added six more in the eighth to break open a close game and cruise to a 17-5 victory over Lipscomb Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
Lipscomb (3-6) scored three runs in the top of the seventh as UAB reliever Andre Parks loaded the bases with a walk, an infield single and a hit batter before being replaced by Blake Allen.?? Allen then walked Lipscomb third baseman Ryan Abrams, making the score 1-0.? The next batter, catcher Miguel Ramirez, hit a two-run double off the center field wall to give Lipscomb a 5-3 lead.? Allen then struck out the next two batters to retire the side.
In the bottom of the seventh, UAB (4-4) sent 12 batters to the plate, scoring eight runs on six hits, and taking advantage of four Lipscomb errors.?? Shortstop Mark Garner and third baseman Matt Gaulden each had two hits and scored twice in the inning.
After reliever Kevin Brannon retired the Bisons in the top of the eighth, the Blazers struck again in the bottom of the inning.? Right fielder Eric Lyon drove in two runs with a home run to right field, and Gaulden drove in three more with a shot to left center, giving him four RBI for the afternoon.?
Allen (1-1) worked one and two-thirds innings to earn the victory, allowing no runs on one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.?? UAB starter Joe McRae worked six complete innings, allowing two runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
Lipscomb reliever Matt Pardue (1-1) was the losing pitcher, working one and one-third innings, allowing four runs on four hits, with no walks and one strikeout.
Seven different UAB players drove in runs in the game, including catcher Al Hecklinski, who hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth inning that gave the Blazers a 3-1 lead.
Lipscomb designated hitter Michael Bailey also had a home run in the game, a towering solo shot to right field off McRae in the second inning that tied the game at 1-1.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1:00 pm CST.
