Blazer Baseball Holds On For Win Over Lipscomb

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
A two-run homer by first baseman Chris George in the bottom
of the fifth inning put UAB ahead to stay as the Blazers held on to defeat Lipscomb 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
The victory gave UAB (5-4) the edge in the three-game
weekend series.? The Blazers won
Saturday's game 17-5 and Lipscomb (3-7) won Friday's meeting 6-0.
UAB took a 2-0 lead in the bottom
of the first inning as second baseman Keith Barnes reached on a walk and designated hitter Brandon Isbell singled to center field and both scored on the next play
as Bisons third baseman Ryan Abrams
committed a throwing error on a ground ball by George.
Lipscomb responded with a run in
the top of the second as shortstop Larry Nesbitt drove in second baseman Jeremy George with a two-out double and was then thrown out trying to
advance to third base on the play.
The Bisons tied the game in the
top of the third inning as Abrams doubled with one out, advanced to third on a
fly out by designated hitter Miguel Ramirez, and scored on a single by first baseman Michael Bailey.
In the bottom of the fifth, UAB
left fielder Mitch Jones led off with a
single, and advanced to second on Barnes' sacrifice bunt.? After Isbell lined out to right field,
George stepped to the plate and slammed a pitch by Lipscomb starter Brent
Anderson over the left center field wall
to give UAB a 4-2 lead.
Lipscomb threatened in the top of
the ninth.?? Blazer reliever Jeremy
Hudson hit leadoff batter Sam Hamstra and walked Drew Townsend, then gave way to reliever Blake Allen.? Nesbitt then
moved Hamstra and Townsend into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.? Center fielder Brian Passons drove in Hamstra with a sacrifice fly to center field,
making the score 4-3.? After
walking Abrams, Allen got Ramirez to fly out to right field to end the game.
UAB starter Scott Gibson (1-1) worked five complete innings to earn the victory, allowing
two runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.? Allen picking up his second save of the
season, allowing no runs or hits and walking one in the ninth inning.?? Middle reliever Hudson surrendered
his first run in nine innings of work this season,? allowing one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.
Lipscomb's Anderson (1-1)
took the loss, working four and two thirds innings, allowing four runs on eight
hits with two walks and one strikeout.
UAB will be in action again Tuesday
(Feb. 27) with a home game vs. South
Alabama at Young Memorial Field.? First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm
CST.
