Lipscomb starter Jason Gray pitched seven no-hit innings and wound up with a one-hit complete-game shutout as the Bisons (3-5) defeated UAB (3-4) 6-0 Friday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
Gray (1-2), a senior right-hander from Acworth, Ga., was dominant all afternoon, allowing only three UAB baserunners - one on a walk, one on an error, one hit batsman - in the first seven innings. He faced 30 UAB batters in the game, retiring 25. He walked only one and struck out 10.
Gray's no-hitter lasted only a few pitches into the bottom of the eighth inning, however, as UAB catcher Al Hecklinski led off with a single. Gray then retired six of the next seven Blazer batters he faced, allowing only left fielder Cory Acklus to reach on an error with two outs in the ninth inning.
The game started out as a two-way pitching duel between Gray and UAB starter Rob Caputo. Caputo (0-1) allowed only one baserunner in the first two innings, but got into trouble in the top of the third, loading the bases with a hit batter and two walks and then allowing a two-run double by Lipscomb third baseman Ryan Abrams. Lipscomb would go on to score three runs in the inning, all charged to Caputo, who was replaced by right-handed reliever Jon Burgett following Abrams' double. Caputo worked two complete innings, allowing three runs on two hits, with three walks and three strikeouts.
Burgett, worked two complete innings, allowing three runs on five hits, with no walks and one strikeout. Reliever Clay Bush came on in the fifth inning and pitched five complete innings for UAB, allowing no runs on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Lipscomb scored three runs in the fifth inning,, as catcher Miguel Ramirez drove in one with an RBI single and designated hitter Michael Bailey added a two-run single.
UAB and Lipscomb will continue their three-game series Saturday, with a game set to begin at 2:00 pm CST at Young Memorial Field.
