BIRMINGHAM - The UAB women's soccer team scored three goals to defeat the Louisville Cardinals 3-0 Sunday afternoon as junior goalkeeper Lisa Nowoslawski (Melbourne, Fla.) earned her third shutout of the season in Conference USA play at West Campus Field.
"I am very pleased with today's game, " said UAB head coach Paul Harbin . "This is the first game like I've felt we have come out and played the way we are capable of playing for an entire match. We've had some game where we've come out a little slow and now I think we were focused and we are starting to get a little more workman-like in what we do. We are starting to do things the right way on a consistent basis."
UAB senior defender Bridget Winston (Dallas, Texas) scored the game winning goal of the contest at the 23:04 mark of the first half as she headed a Briana McCarty ( Lawrenceville, Ga.) conerkick past Louisville's keeper.
In the 47th minute, Winston added a second goal for the Blazers as she duplicated the first goal scoring with a header from McCarty's cornerkick. The goal was Winston's fourth of the season, while McCarty was awarded her third and fourth assist, respectively.
Freshman forward Tara Kidwell (Leesburg, Va.) added a late UAB goal at the 62:46 mark in the game to give the Blazers their final goal. The score was assisted by junior Stephanie Davis ( Huntsville, Ala.) and sophomore Jill Knottek (Midland, Texas).
"The thing I saw with them afterwards is they are starting to get confidence," added Harbin "and I think that was the missing factor. Before, we always stepped out and wondered what was going to happen and now I think they are starting to feel like they are in control of what is happening."
The Blazers dominated the entire match as they came away with 16 shots compared to Louisville's five. Nowoslawski garnered three saves on the day.
With the win, UAB improves to an overall record of 4-6 on the season, while Louisville dropped to 2-8. UAB earned its second shutout of the week after defeating Birmingham-Southern 3-0 this past Thursday.
The Blazers continue their three-game C-USA homestand this weekend taking on Houston Friday at 5:30 p.m. and TCU Sunday at 1:00 p.m at West Campus Field. Both games are doubleheaders with the UAB men's team.
