Women's Soccer Wins Fifth-Straight Match

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - UAB scored twice in the first half and benefitted from a Southern Miss own-goal in the second half to win its fifth-straight match as the Blazers defeated the Golden Eagles 3-1 in Conference USA women's soccer action Friday night.
With the win, UAB improves to 7-6 overall and 5-2 in C-USA, while Southern Miss dropped to 7-5 overall and 1-5 in C-USA play.
UAB got on the board in the 27th minute as senior forward Denise Peters (Jacksonville, Ala.) took an assist from junior defender Stephanie Davis (Huntsville, Ala.) and fired it past Southern Miss goalkeeper Leslie Schoeplein.
The Blazers added their second score at the 37:20 mark as freshman defender Briana McCarty (Lawrenceville, Ga.) served the ball to freshman midfielder Jenny Rynders (Marietta, Ga.) from the corner for the goal.
In the second half, UAB tallied another goal as the ball ricocheted off a Southern Miss player for an own-goal in the 77th minute of play.
The Golden Eagles' lone goal of the game came when Katie Adams converted on an assist by Laurie Beaury in the 80th minute.
Both teams fired 11 shots on the night and UAB goalkeeper Lisa Nowoslawski (Melbourne, Fla.) had three saves.
The Blazers travel next to New Orleans, La. Sunday for a 1 p.m. match against the Green Wave.
