BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team won its fourth straight match narrowly defeating TCU 2-1 in double overtime Sunday afternoon at West Campus Field.
The Blazers improve to 6-6 overall and 4-2 in Conference USA play with the win, while TCU drops to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in C-USA play.
The Blazers dominated the first half of the game as they had eight shots to the Horned Frogs two. Despite UAB's aggressive play, the half remained scoreless.
The Horned Frogs were first to get on the board. At the 50:14 mark, forward Nicole Carman scored an unassisted goal on the Blazer's open net as goalkeeper Lisa Nowoslawski (Melbourne, Fla.) slipped in the mud due to the wet conditions on the field.
As the second period continued, both teams played aggressive as the shots only favored UAB 7-6.
With less than a minute to go in the game, the Blazers tied the game as senior forward Denise Peters (Jacksonville, Ala.) scored on a scramble in front of the net. The goal was her fourth on the season. Junior forward Adrienne Suffridge (Columbia, S.C.) and freshman forward Tara Kidwell (Leesburg, Va.) were credited with the assists.
The intensity was high in overtime as the Blazers garnered five shots, but the match remained scoreless during the first overtime.
In the 107th minute of play, a scramble in front of the TCU net proved to be the winning moment for the Blazers as a TCU defender knocked the ball into her own net.
"I feel good about today's game," said head coach Paul Harbin . "We shifted some things around from last game. We paid attention to how we were defending as a unit and I thought today we defended really well as a unit except for a bad break when one of our players forgot to track and Lisa fell in the mud."
Overall the Blazers had 21 shots to TCU's 10 and 13 corner kicks to TCU's 3. Nowoslawski garnered four saves in the match for the Blazers.
The Blazers are on the road next weekend for more C-USA action as they travel to Southern Miss Friday and Tulane Sunday. UAB will take on the Golden Eagles at 4 p.m. and the Green Wave at 1 p.m.
