Kayla Alexander spent four seasons as the UAB women’s basketball assistant coach and nine seasons overall.
For Alexander’s fourth season with the Blazers, she helped guide Sara Bershers and Jade Weathersby to be named AAC Honorable Mention, along with Weathersby who earned a spot on the AAC All-Conference Second Team.
For the 2024-25 campaign she helped guide the team to rank nationally in defensive rebounds per game (25th – 28.2), 3-point field goals per game (26th – 8.4) and blocks per game (31st – 4.4). The Blazers also ranked in the top five in eight categories in the American Athletic Conference, which includes 3-point field goals per game (1st – 8.4), blocks per game (1st – 4.4), defensive rebounds per game (3rd – 28.2), assists per game (3rd – 14.3), free throw percentage (3rd – 72.8), field goal percentage (3rd – 41.4), 3-point field goal percentage (3rd – 33.2) and points per game (5th – 67.0).
During her third season as the assistant coach with the Blazers, she assisted in setting the program record for the most made threes in a single game at Tulane (20). Alexander saw Mia Moore be named AAC Player of the Week and selected to the AAC Honor Roll four times, along with Denim DeShields who earned a spot on the Honor Roll three times. She also assisted in coaching Jade Weathersby to two AAC Freshman of the Week.
Also in 2024, Alexander assisted in helping Moore and Deshields earn AAC All-Conference Third Team, while Moore was also named to the All-Newcomer Team.
In 2022-23, Alexander’s second season with UAB, she assisted in coaching Margaret Whitley to an All-Conference USA Second Team selection, Denim DeShields to a Conference USA All-Freshman Team selection and three C-USA Freshman of the Week.
In her first season as an assistant with the Blazers, she coached Conference USA All-Conference and All-Defensive selection Zakyia Weathersby, who led the league in six categories including rebounding and shooting percentage.
Alexander spent five season as UAB women’s basketball director of operations before being elevated to her current position.As director of operations, Alexander’s duties included handling the program’s daily operations, coordinating travel itineraries, assisting with scouting videos and overseeing the team’s student managers. She also oversaw the overall operation of basketball camps.
Prior to stepping into that role, she served as a student manager for the program for three years beginning in 2013 after transferring in from Eureka College with associate head coach Taren Martin.
In her one season as a player at Eureka College, she saw action in 18 games and shot 30.8 percent from the floor. She also reeled in 44 boards, dished out six assists and netted 27 points during the 2012-13 campaign.
A native of Dayton, Ohio, Alexander guided Eureka High School to IHSA 2A regional and sectional crowns in 2012. She received All-Cornbelt Conference Honorable Mention as a senior and led the Hornets to the St. Bede Christmas Tournament championship, receiving All-Tournament honors.
Alexander earned her degree in business management from UAB in 2016 and is currently pursuing her MBA. Kayla and husband Timothy are the proud parents of twins of Noah and Noelle. She is the daughter of Alabama A&M Director of Athletics Dr. Paul Bryant and Shannon Bryant.
