BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball (7-12, 0-7 American) fell to North Texas (11-8, 5-2 American) 72-59 on Tuesday night at Bartow Arena. Cali Smallwood led the Blazers with 21 points and Sofia Munoz registered 10 points.

The Mean Green was led by Cherie Spencer with 16 points, while Aysia Proctor totaled 13 points. Jazzy Owens-Barnett tallied 11 points and Mekhia Chase had 10.

Game Notes

Smallwood led the Blazers with 21 points and has now scored 20-plus points three times this season.
Smallwood was 8-for-13 from the field and 5-for-9 from the perimeter.
Freshman Ashlyn Howard had a season-high eight points, four field goals, four rebounds and one assist.
Molly Moffitt matched her career-high three assists.
Jordan Rosier tallied four rebounds which was a season best.
Monae' Duffy and Moffitt led UAB with six rebounds each.
The Blazers shot 47 percent from the paint, 50 percent from three and 83 percent at the line.
UNT shot 38 percent from the field, 47 percent from three and 72 percent at the free throw line.
The game was tied 18-18 after the first quarter.
The game featured nine tied scores and three lead changes.

How It Happened

UAB jumped out to an early lead with perimeter shooting and free throws [9-5].
North Texas was able to respond with transition buckets and offensive rebounds to lead [13-11].
The Blazers took back the lead with both teams then trading baskets [18-15].
A late three-pointer helped the Mean Green tie the game to close the first quarter [18-18].
The first part of the quarter went back-and-forth with four tied scores and two lead changes [27-27].
North Texas began to control tempo, scoring off turnovers and at the free throw line [33-27].
A late 8-2 run by the Mean Green stretched the lead [35-31].
UNT closed out the frame and had a nine-point lead going into halftime [40-31].
To open the third, North Texas had a quick scoring burst, pushing the lead into double-digits [49-31].
UAB was able to find some rhythm from the perimeter and the paint [49-36].
The Mean Green had its biggest lead of the game with 1:15 left on the clock [57-38].
Moffitt recorded a layup and Smallwood made a three at the buzzer to close the quarter [57-43].
The Blazers showed fight early, cutting into the deficit with the help from Howard, Smallwood and Journey Armstead [61-50].
North Texas answered each push with timely baskets and strong defensive play [67-50].
UAB made a late push with a 7-0 run and 2:38 remaining [70-59].
UNT answered back with a layup and held on defensively to close out the game and earn the win [72-59].
