Softball Heads to #9/#8 Alabama, Tuesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB Softball hits the road after a week at Mary Bowers Field, making the short trip to Tuscaloosa to face #9/#8 Alabama on Tuesday at 4 p.m. UAB went 2-2 last week, including strong wins over Southern Illinois and Missouri State, plus a hard-fought battle with the top-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers. The Blazers are 7-7 heading to Rhoads Stadium for the first of two matchups against the Crimson Tide this season. UAB will host Alabama at Mary Bowers Field on April 21.

- UAB Softball went 2-1 at the Green and Gold Classic, defeating good Southern Illinois and Missouri State teams, losing to #1 Tennessee, 6-1.
- The Blazers scored in the 7th inning against Tennessee, scoring the first earned run against Karlyn Pickens all season long.
- Ashlyn Shirah recorded a hit in all four of the Blazers' home games last week, extending her on-base streak to 25 games dating back to last season. Shirah had three hits and two RBI against Southern Illinois.
- Transfer Abbi Perkins walked four times against West Georgia, tying the program record and becoming the fourth player to do so. She has now reached base in all 14 games as a Blazer.
- Perkins singled and walked against Tennessee, the first UAB play to reach base twice against Tennessee.
- Freshman Charlee Bennett leads the team in batting average and slugging percentage. Bennett hit her first career homer and triple against SIU in her second-career three-hit game.
- Hannah Dorsett leads the Blazers with 17 hits this season, including three doubles.
- Dorsett tallied 11 assists against South Alabama, the most in UAB history and tied for the most by any NCAA DI player since 2020. Dorsett currently ranks 15th in Division I in assists.
- Olivia Cummings has four of the Blazers' five wins, picking up two wins at the Mardi Gras Classic. Cummings has a team-best 3.31 ERA in 36.0 innings pitched.
- Alabama is 13-0, the second undefeated SEC team UAB has played in the past week.
- The Crimson Tide opened the season with a 5-0 weekend at Georgia Tech, picking up a pair of wins against the Yellow Jackets, plus wins against Villanova and East Carolina.
- Alabama went 4-0 during their only weekend at Rhoads Stadium, run-ruling Purdue twice and winning a pair of games against Liberty.
- Last week, Alabama beat #6/#7 Florida State twice, including an 8-0 win over the Seminoles. The Crimson Tide also defeated Elon and Dartmouth in Tallahassee.
- Marlie Giles leads the Crimson Tide with a .533 batting average, recording 16 hits in 30 at bats.

- A rematch against Queens at 9 a.m. CT begins Saturday play, before the Blazers play #22/#13 South Carolina at 11:30 a.m.
