Softball to Open Home Slate Against West Georgia

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB Softball will play its home opener on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 4 p.m. against West Georgia. The Blazers are coming off a 3-2 weekend at the Mardi Gras Classic in Mobile, hosted by South Alabama. In Mobile, UAB defeated each of its three opponents, including a 3-2 extra innings victory against South Alabama, the Blazers' first win over the Jaguars since 2017.
The meeting between the 5-5 Blazers and 3-7 Wolves marked just the third matchup all-time.

- Ashlyn Shirah reached base safely in all five games at the Mardi Gras Classic, improving her on-base streak to 21 games, dating back to 2025.
- Transfer Abbi Perkins reached base nine times in Mobile with three hits, three walks, and three hit-by-pitches. She has now reached base in all 10 games as a Blazer.
- Charlee Bennett continued her success from opening weekend with a three-hit game against Western Michigan, including two doubles, becoming the first Blazer Freshman to hit two doubles in a game since Lindsey Smith in 2022.
- Hannah Dorsett leads the Blazers with 13 hits this season, including a pair of doubles.
- Dorsett tallied 11 assists against South Alabama, the most in UAB history and tied for the most by any NCAA DI player since 2020.
- Olivia Cummings has four of the Blazers' five wins, picking up two wins at the Mardi Gras Classic. Cummings has a team-best 3.03 ERA in 30.0 innings pitched.

- West Georgia defeated Bellarmine twice at home during opening weekend, losing its other four games on its home field to Georgia State, Drexel, and Austin Peay, twice.
- Last weekend, West Georgia opened the weekend with a 9-1 win over Youngstown State, before losing three straight to end the weekend in Spartanburg, S.C.
- Statistically, West Georgia is led by Jenna Samuel, hitting .467 with 14 hits in 30 at bats. Samuel has hit three home runs and driven in 14 runs already for the Wolves.
- Zekylah Boyd, Ella Oswalt, Madison Humber, and Megan Waits are all hitting above .300.
- Oswalt leads the Wolves with four homers and a .923 slugging percentage.
- Mickey Coslor is five of six on stolen bases this season.
- The Wolves went 12-40 in 2025, losing 20 of their 24 ASUN games.

- Charlotte swept the American Weekly Honors with Taylor Jones winning Pitcher of the Week and Jaylah Jarrell taking home Player of the Week. Jones went 2-0 with a save in 15.0 innings pitched, not allowing any earned runs. Jarrell slashed .667/.692/1.250 in the 49ers' 5-0 weekend with a pair of home runs and six RBI.
- The 49ers had a great weekend at home, defeating No. 14 Virginia Tech, 4-2, and sweeping the weekend against RV Michigan, 8-0 (5) and 16-13. Charlotte improved to 8-2.
- East Carolina picked up a pair of power-conference victories defeating Notre Dame, 4-3, and Maryland, 2-1.
- South Florida defeated Boston College, 5-4, at home.
- Florida Atlantic wrapped a long weekend in Clearwater with a 13-2 win over James Madison after losing its first four games of the weekend.
- While no American teams cracked any top-25 polls, Florida Atlantic and Charlotte both received votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball and NFCA rankings. Florida Atlantic also received votes in the D1Softball top 25.
- Florida Atlantic (5th), Charlotte (8th), and South Florida (18th) all remained in the D1Softball Mid-Major Rankings.
- UAB hosts the Green and Gold Classic this weekend, welcoming #1/#1 Tennessee, --/#25 Ole Miss, Southern Illinois, Mercer, and Missouri State to Mary Bowers Field. The Blazers make their first appearance of the tournament with the Friday nightcap, taking on Tennessee at 7 p.m. UAB will play Southern Illinois and Missouri State on Saturday before wrapping up the tournament against Mercer on Sunday.
