MOBILE, Ala. - UAB Softball fell in the Mardi Gras Classic finale to the hosts, South Alabama. The Blazers struggled offensively with just five hits, all singles, and zero runs batted in.

Despite the Blazers scoring first, South Alabama homered in the fourth inning. The long bomb was enough to pull the Blazer starter, Olivia Cummings. The Jaguars hit well off Caitlin Russell, UAB's relief pitcher, scoring four runs in two innings.

Zaylen Tucker led the Blazers with two hits in her first career start. Tucker singled twice and scored the only run of the game for UAB.

Notables

Ashlyn Shirah recorded a hit to reach base safely for the 21st consecutive game.
Tucker made her first career start, playing right field.

The Play-by-Play

UAB got the scoring going in the third inning when a Shirah groundball was misplayed by the South Alabama third basemen, allowing Tucker to score (1-0).
South Alabama tied the game in the fourth inning with a line drive homer to right field (1-1).
The Jaguars added to their lead in the fifth on a Blazer throwing error (1-2).
A single to left center field drove in two more runs for South Alabama, putting the Jaguars firmly ahead (1-4).
South Alabama scored its final run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly, scoring their leadoff double (1-5).

Tucker took advantage of her first career start, going 2-for-3 and scoring the Blazers' only run of the game. Tucker made a pair of catches in right field.

Dorsett drew the only walk of the game for UAB. Perkins, the only hit-by-pitch of the game.

In the Circle

Olivia Cummings got her third start of the weekend.
Cummings went 4.0 innings, her shortest outing of the season. She allowed one earned run on three hits and a walk.
South Alabama's home run off of Cummings was her first allowed of the season.
Russell relieved Cummings in the fifth inning, giving up the winning runs in her two innings on the mound.
Russell allowed four runs, three earned on four hits and a pair of walks.
Russell struck out two batters.

The Blazers are at Mary Bowers Field for their home opener on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 4 p.m., against West Georgia. UAB then hosts the Green and Gold Classic from Friday through Sunday, welcoming Tennessee, Ole Miss, Southern Illinois, Mercer, and Missouri State to the Magic City. The Blazers wrap up day one of the tournament against Tennessee at 7 p.m.
