Longo Sets 1000m School Record, Blazers Set Nine Personal Bests

BIRMINGHAM - UAB Track & Field wrapped up the first half of the weekend on Friday as the Blazers competed in the Blazer Invite at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Lidia Longo set the school record in the 1000m race as she placed third with a time of 2:52.33. The record was last held by Bethany Evans in 2020.
Lia Castillo also had a PR in the 1000m race. The junior finished in fourth overall with a time of 2:54.77.
Sarah Hopkins' strong start to the season continued on Friday. The freshman elevated her personal best Weight Throw from the Birmingham Indoor Icebreaker and set a mark of 15.11m and placed fourth in the event.
Jasmine Dereje finished third overall in the 500m race and won heat 2 with a time of 1:18.85. It was the first time Dereje had competed in the 500m race as a Blazer.
Kelly Hughes (3rd) and Katelyn Valtos (6th) each finished strong in the 600m race. Hughes won Heat 2 while Valtos placed third. It was the first time the duo had competed in the 600m race in their careers.
Brenna Dutcher improved her previous best on Friday as the freshman set a new high mark of 11.53m in the Shot Put.
Savannah Meyer also improved her best time in the Mile race. The freshman completed the race in 5:13.27 and placed third overall. Kenlie Nelson set her personal best coming in at 5:14.99 and placed fifth.
Overall, the Blazers set nine personal bests across all events.
The Green and Gold return to action on Saturday for the Vulcan Invite at the Birmingham Crossplex. Events are set to begin at 9 a.m.
