BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball (7-8, 0-3 American) battled against South Florida (9-7, 2-1 American) on Tuesday night at Bartow Arena but fell short, 70-65.

Three Blazers scored in double figures with Cali Smallwood leading UAB with 20 points. Sofia Munoz and Eleecia Carter each recorded 12 points. Monae' Duffy led the Green and Gold with 13 rebounds.

The Bulls were led by Katie Davidson with 20 points, while Edyn Battle registered 18 points. L'or Mputu led South Florida with 14 rebounds.

Game Notes

Smallwood was 7-for-13 from the field and perfect at the line with five free throws to match her career-best.
Smallwood matched her season-best eight rebounds and two steals.
Smallwood tallied double digit points for the 12^th time this year.
Carter came away with five rebounds on the night and were all defensive.
Duffy registered double digit rebounds for the fifth time this season.
Duffy recorded six of her 13 rebounds in the first quarter.
UAB outscored USF in the first quarter (19-15) and the fourth quarter (24-19) and each team equaled points in the third (16-16).
South Florida shot 41 percent from the paint, 34 percent from the three and 61 percent at the free throw line.
The Blazers shot 39 percent from the field and 79 percent from the line.
UAB scored 34 points in the paint and 17 points off turnovers.

How It Happened

The Blazers jumped out to an early lead behind strong rebounds and interior scoring [8-2].
South Florida went on a 9-0 run to take the lead with 3:22 remaining [13-10].
UAB was able to close out the quarter on a 7-0 run to take back the lead [19-15].
In the second, the Bulls were able to take the lead early in the third quarter with defensive pressure [24-22].
The Blazers were able to get within one of South Florida with 4:50 on the clock [26-25]
UAB struggled offensively, scoring six points in the period.
USF closed the quarter on a 9-0 run to build a 10-point cushion heading into halftime [35-25].
South Florida had its biggest lead of the game early in the third quarter [39-25].
The Blazers were able to match the Bulls and got within five with 3:51 left to play [42-37].
To close out the third, USF had a 10-point lead [51-41].
UAB matched South Florida's scoring with each team scoring 16 points in the frame.
The Blazers made its strongest push of the night, scoring 24 points in the final period.
UAB repeatedly cut the deficit to single digits with aggressive play in the paint.
Munoz made a three to get within five with 30 seconds left [65-60].
Smallwood was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free throws to trail by four with nine seconds left to play [69-65].
South Florida answered with a timely free frow to hold on for the 70-65 win.
