BIRMINGHAM - UAB women's soccer (3-2-1) earned a 1–0 victory over Western Kentucky (3-3-0) on Thursday night at PNC Field, powered by a first-half strike from junior forward Lola Sommer.
The decisive goal came in the 40th minute, when Sommer tucked away her second goal of the season off an assist from Lailah Stewart, giving the Blazers the lead just before halftime. It was the only goal in a tightly contested match where both sides generated chances but couldn't break through.
Western Kentucky applied late pressure, outshooting the Green and Gold 6–3 in the second half and earning four corner kicks after the break. But UAB's defense, anchored by goalkeeper Leah Parsons, stood firm. Parsons collected four saves on the night to secure her third win and second shutout of the season.
Lady Toppers keeper Maddie Davis finished with two saves, including a key stop on Stewart in the 39th minute just before the goal sequence.
Overall, UAB outshot Western Kentucky 12–9. Despite a flurry of late looks from WKU, including attempts from Makenna Egan, Mia Merritt and Danielle Lewin, the Blazers closed out the clean sheet.
Up next, the Blazers are back at home again to host Belmont on Sunday, September 7. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CT.
