Blazers Drop Late-Inning Heartbreaker at Charlotte
5/9/2025 10:41:00 PM | Baseball
The 49ers got on the board first in the bottom of the 1st. After a leadoff single by Juan Rivera, he came around to score on a groundout by Connor Maryniak to put Charlotte up 1-0.
The game was locked in a stalemate until the 7th inning as both AAC Pitcher of the Year hopefuls battled into the late innings.
But it was the Blazers that delivered the first big punch in the late innings. After a good at bat by Tyler Waugh with a full count and two outs, Tyler Harrington stepped in and launched a 2-run go-ahead home run to put the Blazers ahead 2-1.
Two batters into the bottom of the 7th, the 49ers took the lead on a Dawson Bryce 2-run home run to take a 3-2 lead. The rally continued as three batters later, Blake Martin hit an RBI double to add to the lead. Then, Rivera reached on a fielder's choice which scored Martin and gave Charlotte a 5-2 lead.
The Blazers started a rally of their own with two outs in the top of the 8th. After back-to-back singles by Wesley Helms and Todd Clay, Camden Hayslip launched the first pitch he saw over the right field fence for a 3-run home run to tie the game at five.
That score would hold until the game went to extra innings. UAB started another two-out rally in the top of the 10th. After a walk by Helms, Todd Clay sent a ball into the trees past the left center field fence to give the Blazers a 7-5 lead.
Charlotte would answer back in the bottom half of the inning. The first three 49er hitters reached by way of a walk, double, and single to cut the deficit to 7-6. With runners on first and third, the Blazers cut down the would-be tying run on a safety squeeze at home. On the next pitch, Spencer Nolan singled up the middle to tie the game at seven apiece.
With two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the 11th, Connor Maryniak hit a home run to right field to give Charlotte an 8-7 victory.
Colin Daniel earned the start for the Blazers. The junior right-hander tossed 6.2 innings and allowed two earned runs and struck out three.
Daniel's counterpart was Blake Gillespie who pitched seven innings, seven strikeouts and allowed two runs. Adam Stanton picked up the win as he pitched a scoreless 11th inning.
