UAB Softball Splits Midweek Double Header

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Softball team (17-22) split the double header against Auburn (25-16) on Wednesday night, beating the tigers for the first time in 22 years.
GAME 1
The first of a double header against Auburn started with Bella Wiggins reaching on an error in the first inning, but Auburn retired the next two batters. Alyssa Aguilar and Antonia Henderson started with back to back singles in the second. The bases were loaded with a walk on the next at bat, before Auburn got the last out on a close play at third.
Auburn scored the first run of the game on an RBI out in the second. Followed by four runs in the third inning on two errors and two hits. Icess Tresvik singled to score the first two and then a throwing error and a double allowed the other two runs to cross.
AnnaLea Adams hit a solo home run to left field that added to the Auburn lead. Auburn led 6-1 after five innings.
UAB pitched three pitches including Tait Davidson and Caroline McLendon in relief. The Blazers left seven on base including bases loaded in the second. Both teams had two errors and just five hits on the day, but the Tigers scored six runs on those five hits.
GAME 2
UAB started off the game with three runs in the first inning. Two wild pitches and then an RBI single from Alyssa Aguilar scored those runs. This was Aguilar's 11th RBI of the season and 36th of her career.
A tough second inning allowed Auburn to score two runs. Ma'Nia Womack hit a double and an attempted steal turned error scored another run. UAB led 3-2 after three innings.
The Blazers scored a run on an error by the third basemen in the fourth inning. Britt Bourgoyne scored her 10th run this season because of the error. This was one of four Auburn errors in the game.
Auburn's Aubrie Lisenby hit a double in the fourth inning to close the gap on the Blazers. UAB led 4-3 after four innings. The Blazers held off any threat of a run allowing just one base runner after the fourth.
Caitlin Russell came in a pitched very effectively starting in the fourth. She finished with 3.2 innings giving up just one hit, zero runs, and striking out three. She got the last three outs retiring three straight batters in the seventh and getting the win. UAB beat Auburn for the first time in 22 years, last winning in 2003. Auburn had won 14 straight games before tonight.
UAB is on the road in San Antonio, TX to face UTSA Friday-Sunday.
