BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Softball team (16-21, 6-9) split a double header against Wichita State (19-18-1, 7-7-1) because of rain expected on Sunday. Game one ended with a Shockers win 6-5. UAB won the final game of the series 4-1.
Game One
The shockers started off the top of the first inning with a run on a UAB error. The Blazers answer back with two runs to close out the first inning. Dorsett and Wiggins both singled then Hope Tucker hit a fielder's choice to score a run. Tucker drove in her 21st RBI of the year with that at bat. The other run came on a passed ball that allowed Dorsett to score.
UAB got a base hit in the second by Britt Bourgoyne and Bella Wiggins. UAB ends the second inning with an RBI single Hannah Dorsett giving the Blazers a 3-1 lead heading into the third. Dorsett now has 10 RBIs on the year, hitting primarily in the one or two hole.
Trying to close the gap Wichita State scores a run in the third, bringing the score to 3-2. Wichita State is slugging .490, which is good enough for fourth in the conference.
The Blazers end the fifth inning with a lead change as the Shockers score two runs on one hit and an error. UAB fought in the seventh inning scoring two runs on an AJ Kramer double and a Mackenzie Droddy single. Wichita State won 6-5.
Game Two
Heading into the final game of the series, Wichita State won games one and two scoring 13 runs. A double by the Shockers gave them a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
UAB answered right away with an AJ Kramer double to left field. Antonia Henderson brought in a run on an RBI groundout. Kramer had two RBIs on the series.
There were no hits or base runners through innings three and four. Before the beginning of the fifth inning, rain started to fall causing a 15 minute delay in the game.
Cailtin Russell entered the game in the fifth inning allowing just two hits in the final three innings. The Blazers take control in the bottom of the sixth by scoring two more runs extending their lead 4-1. Hope Tucker doubled to right field to drive in her 22nd and 23rd runs of the year. Dorsett came across the plate for the 24th time this season.
UAB is now seventh in the conference standings, while Wichita State is now in fifth.
The Blazers head to Auburn to face the Tigers for a double header on Wednesday starting at 3:30 p.m.
