Blazers Clinch Winning Weekend With 12-7 Win Over Michigan State

GREENVILLE, S.C. - UAB (13-3) clinched a winning weekend with a 12-7 win over Michigan State (12-3) on Sunday afternoon at Fluor Field. Todd Clay fueled the UAB offense going 5-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

MSU got the scoring started in the bottom of the 2nd. With the bases full of Spartans, Parker Picot grounded into a double play but a run scored to put MSU up 1-0.

The Blazers answered back in the top half of the 3rd. With runners on second and third, Nick Hollifield sent a sac fly to left center to score Gavin Lewis Jr. Logan Braunschweig scored on an errant throw from the outfield that ended up in the UAB dugout to give the Blazers a 2-1 lead.

Braunschweig has now reached base safely in an American Conference leading 44 consecutive games.

The Green and Gold got busy again in the top of the 4th. Landon Beaver grounded out to second to score Tyler Waugh from third. Three batters later, Braunschweig singled through the left side to score Jaden Anderson.

UAB kept the momentum going in the top of the 5th. The Blazers had runners on the corners and a failed pickoff attempt to first allowed Waugh to score from third.

Todd Clay picked up his third hit of the day on an RBI single to right to score Lewis from third.

The Spartans sparked a rally in the bottom half of the 6th. MSU had the bases loaded with two outs and cashed in all three runs on an error by the Blazer defense to cut the Blazer lead to 6-4. After a four pitch walk the next at bat, Randy Seymour hit a double off the Green Monster in left to score both Jake Dresselhouse and Parker Picot to tie the game.

The Green and Gold broke the game open in the top of the 8th. With Braunschweig standing on first, Nick Hollifleld delivered a rope down the left field line to double home Braunschweig. The Blazers had the bases loaded again, this time for Jaden Anderson where he stroked a single to center to score Hollifield and Clay. Three wild pitches later, Tyler Waugh and Anderson scored to put the Blazers up 11-6.

The Spartans struck back with one in the 8th inning thanks to a home run to left center by Parker Picot.

Camden Hayslip drove home the Blazers final run of the day in the 9th on an RBI single to right to score Nick Hollifield.

Sunday's win versus Michigan State marked UAB's first win against a Big Ten opponent since the 2022 season when it defeated Northwestern in the fourth game of a four game sweep.

The Blazers return home on Tuesday as the nationally ranked Alabama Crimson Tide comes to Regions Field. First pitch will be at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
