Women’s Basketball Opens Play at AAC Tournament on Sunday

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball will take on Rice in the second round of the American Conference Tournament in Fort Worth, Texas on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m. CT and will air live on ESPN+.
The Blazers enter Sunday's contest 16-14 overall and 7-11 in conference play, while the Owls are 14-16 on the season and 7-11 in league play. The game marks the 27th time the two teams have faced each other and the third time this season. UAB earned a 63-56 win in overtime on January 22 and fell 73-48 at Rice on February 25. The Owls lead the all-time series 14-12.
Rice is coming off a 68-56 loss against North Texas on Tuesday, while the Blazers earned a 66-64 win versus Tulane on Tuesday.
Tracey Bershers led the Blazers with 17 points while Sara Bershers followed behind with 16 points. Molly Moffitt matched her career-best with 14 points and added eight rebounds. Jade Weathersby led the Green and Gold in the rebound category with 15.
UAB was able to maintain its lead in the third using 46 percent shooting and seven players putting points on the board. The Green and Gold had a nine-point lead at 54-45 going into the final frame.
At the 6:53 mark, UAB had its biggest lead of the game at 12 (58-46). The Green Wave then went on a 12-3 run to only trail by three (61-58). The Blazers were able to extend its lead to 66-58 with 29 seconds remaining. With 25 seconds remaining Tulane made a three, then UAB turned the ball over allowing the Green Wave to make another three to only be down by two with 18 seconds left. Tulane's Victoria Keenan had a three-point opportunity but missed as time ran out.
Maddie Walsh leads the Blazers with 11.8 points per game while Weathersby is following behind with 11.0 points. S. Bershers is averaging 9.3 points while Tracey Bershers is recording 6.5 points per game. Molly Moffitt is registering 6.2 points and Eleecia Carter is averaging 5.5 points per game. Weathersby is leading in the rebound category with 9.4 per game.
Offensively, the Owls are led by Dominique Ennis (12.4 ppg) and Malia Fisher (12.3 ppg).
