Women’s Basketball Falls to Rice in Second Round of AAC Tournament

FORT WORTH, Texas – UAB women's basketball (16-15, 7-11 AAC) fell to Rice (15-16, 7-11 AAC) 76-63 in the second round of the AAC Tournament at Dickies Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Jade Weathersby led the Blazers with 18 points and 11 rebounds to earn her 10th double-double of the season. Eleecia Carter recorded 15 points and a season-best eight assists, while Tracey Bershers registered 11 points.
At the 9:02 mark in the first, UAB went on an 8-0 run to have a 10-3 lead. The Green and Gold were in front at 15-8 with 3:52 remaining, but the Owls went on a 7-0 run to close out the quarter and tie the game 15-15.
The first five minutes of the second saw five lead changes and two tied scores. Weatherby tied the game 24-24 at the 5:11 mark, but Rice grabbed the lead. With 3:05 on the clock, the Blazers trailed by two at 30-28. The Owls extended their lead and made a three at the buzzer to have an eight-point lead at 36-28 going into the break.
UAB was able to get within two early in the third quarter, but Rice started to pull away at the 5:51 mark with a 10-2 run to lead 50-40. Each team went back and forth for the remainder of the frame and the Owls led 57-48 to end the third.
In the fourth, the Blazers got with five points of Rice at 59-54. The Owls then went on a 12-0 to have their biggest lead of the game at 17 (71-54). Rice was able to hold onto its lead for the rest of the quarter to earn the 13-point win.
