UAB Beach Heads West for ASU/GCU Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. – The UAB beach volleyball team heads West this weekend for the ASU/GCU Invitational to be played at Arizona State and Grand Canyon.
The Blazers (10-6) are receiving votes in the AVCA National Rankings for the second straight week and have a loaded slate against ranked competition while in Arizona. UAB opens play on Friday in Tempe with contests against No. 19 Washington (9-8) and No. 12 Arizona State (9-8), followed by traveling to Phoenix on Saturday for games against UTEP (9-8) and No. 13 Grand Canyon (14-6).
UAB is coming off its only bye week of the season and prior to that had a great showing at the FAU Invitational in which the Blazers notched their first ranked win of the season with a 4-1 victory over No. 20 Georgia State.
The Court 4 pair of Kléa Sirois and Lauren Cairo partnered together for the first time this season at FAU and went 4-0 with wins over Georgia State, Florida Gulf Coast, Tampa and Florida Atlantic. For Cairo, she notched the first four wins of her career, and Sirois now has a team-best overall record of 13-3 this season.
UAB's top duo has also been dominant this season as Jasmine Haas and Olivia Stant currently own a 12-4 overall record with all of their matches coming on Court 1. Both juniors, Haas is the winningest Court 1 player in school history (47) and currently ranks fourth overall in program history with 53 career wins. This is Stant's first season on Court 1 and she brings 39 career victories into this weekend's tournament.
This weekend features unfamiliar opponents as this will be the first match for UAB against Washington and just the second against Arizona State. UAB has faced Grand Canyon five times and looks for its first win against the Antelopes this weekend, while the Blazers are 2-0 against CUSA opponent UTEP.
Following the trip to Arizona, UAB heads to Conway, S.C. for the Chanticleer Challenge in which the Blazers will face College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina, Lynchburg and UNC Wilmington.
