BIRMINGHAM - USF (12-9, 1-1) used two big innings to knock off UAB (15-8, 1-1) on Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field, 12-4. The Bulls scored six runs in the 1st inning and five runs in the 9th inning to complete the 8-run victory.
USF started that 6-run 1st inning on a leadoff home run by Ryan Pruitt. The long ball was the first of five consecutive hits to start the game for USF. Matt Rose reached on an infield single and Sebastian Greico doubled to left center to put Bulls on second and third with nobody out. Rafael Betancourt singled to center to bring home Rose and Jackson Mayo singled to score Greico. After a fly out that advanced both runners, Marcus Brodil singled through the right side on an 0-2 pitch to bring home Mayo and Betancourt. The ninth batter of the inning, Carlos Jacome sent a sac fly to left to score Brodil to cap off the 6-run 1st inning for the Bulls.
The Blazers would not answer until the bottom of the 3rd when Todd Clay sent a home run to right center to cut the Bulls lead to 6-2. The home run was Clay's second 2-run home run in as many days.
The Green and Gold would get another run in the 4th inning as Gavin Lewis Jr. grounded out to second to score Wesley Helms who led off the inning with a triple.
With a 6-3 advantage headed to the top of the 7th, Sebastian Greico drove the Bulls' second home run of the day over the right field fence to lead off the inning.
UAB tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the 8th. Jaden Anderson reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. The next batter was Camden Hayslip who doubled him home to cut the USF lead back to three.
The Bulls put the game away in the 9th as the Blazers used three pitchers to get through the inning. The first three USF hitters reached in the inning. Brodil's third RBI of the day was on a groundout to second to score Mock from third. After a hit by pitch loaded the bases again, Jacome reached on an infield single to bring home Mayo. Lohry would score on a balk to give the Bulls a 10-4 lead. Pruitt's second RBI of the afternoon was on a sac fly to center to score Trippel. Rose reached on an infield single to score Jacome from third to cap off another big inning.
Bryce Archie (2-1) earned the win for USF. The two-sport athlete pitched 4.2 innings in relief of Brandon Keyster. Archie struck out three and gave up two runs on 103 pitches. Landen Yorek picked up the save after he came on in relief of Archie when the Bulls were up 7-4 in the 7th.
Colin Daniel settled in after a rocky start to the game. After the 1st inning, the junior did not allow a run the rest of the outing and surrendered just four hits in the 2nd through 6th innings.
The rubber match between UAB and USF will be on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Young Memorial Field. ESPN+ will be televising the game.
