POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – The UAB beach volleyball team will play in a highly competitive tournament this weekend on Pompano Beach at the FAU Invitational. The Blazers have four matches with two on Friday and two on Saturday.
Friday's contests come against No. 20 Georgia State and (rv) Florida Gulf Coast, while Saturday features matches against reigning DII National Champion Tampa and No. 13 Florida Atlantic.
The Blazers went 4-0 at The March to May last weekend and improved their record to 8-3 overall, which is the best start in program history. Three of the four victories came in sweeps over Houston Christian, EKU and New Orleans, while the Blazers won a dramatic 3-2 match over North Alabama in which Court 5 clinched the match with a 15-13 third set victory. On Wednesday, UAB opened its spring break trip with a 4-1 loss at No. 19 FIU.
Junior defender Jasmine Haas became just the sixth player in program history to win 50 matches at UAB last weekend. Haas now has a career record of 51-26 and is on pace to be the winningest player in program history. Of her 51 wins, 45 of them have come on Court 1, which is a school record. She and her teammate Olivia Stant are off to a 10-2 start this season on Court 1.
True freshman Claudia Stockard has been tremendous for the Blazers this season and is off to a 9-3 start with teammate Isabel Day, which includes wins over FIU, Tulane and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The duo has played all but one match on Court 2 this season, in which Day is the career leader in Court 2 wins (26 and counting). Stockard has been instant impact and should continue to play a major role in the lineup.
Following this weekend in Florida, the Blazers are off for a week before heading to Arizona State for a tournament at the end of March.
